For more than 15 years, Dr. Laurie Cuttino has served as a radiation oncologist in the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System, where she focuses on partial breast irradiation techniques. Actively involved in her field, Dr. Laurie Cuttino belongs to a number of professional associations, including the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO).
In an effort to help patients who only speak Spanish to have a better understanding about their cancer diagnosis and potential treatment strategies, ASTRO has produced a number of informative videos in Spanish. These videos help to explain how radiation therapy can be an effective treatment for different presentations of the disease, such as breast cancer, lung cancer, and brain cancer.
With cancer rates increasing and Spanish speakers making up a majority of the country’s population growth over the past 15-plus years, ASTRO created these videos to fill a significant need to reach the Latino community. They give a comprehensive look at all aspects of radiation procedures, including before, during, and after treatment. The organization has produced a total of seven videos for this purpose.
